Overview & Geological Significance
Tucked away in the southeastern corner of Cappadocia near Yeşilhisar, Soğanlı Valley is a serene two-branched canyon where time seems to stand still. Far removed from the commercial bustle of central Göreme, this dramatic gorge served as a major Byzantine monastic center from the 9th to the 13th centuries, housing dozens of rock-cut churches and thousands of white-painted cliffside pigeon lofts.
What makes Soğanlı architecturally unique is that several of its fairy chimneys—most notably the Kubbeli (Domed) Church—were sculpted on the *outside* as well as the inside to resemble freestanding masonry church domes and drums. Combined with the warm hospitality of Soğanlı’s village women, who hand-sew traditional Anatolian rag dolls, it is a paradise for travelers seeking authentic, unspoiled Cappadocia.
