Derinkuyu Underground City
85-meter deep subterranean metropolis built to shelter 20,000 citizens
Overview & Geological Significance
The deepest excavated subterranean refuge in Cappadocia. Eight accessible levels contain stables, wine presses, a cruciform underground church, school, and massive millstone rolling doors.
Historical & Cultural Context
Likely initiated by the Phrygians in the 8th–7th centuries BC, and substantially expanded during the Byzantine-Arab wars (7th-11th century AD) when Christian communities hid underground for months during raids.
“Derinkuyu maintains a steady 13°C (55°F) microclimate year-round. Several connecting tunnels require crouching; take a steady, unhurried pace and follow the blue arrows descending and red arrows exiting. A light sweater is recommended even in midsummer.”
