Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik Vadisi)
Deep lush canyon carved with thousands of ancient dovecotes and evil eye trees
Overview & Geological Significance
Connecting Uçhisar to Göreme, this 4 km canyon was hand-chiseled with thousands of dovecotes since ancient times to harvest guano (fertilizer) for local vineyards.
Historical & Cultural Context
Pigeon manure was critical for cultivating delicious Anatolian grapes and fine wines in this arid volcanic soil. Fresco painters also used pigeon egg whites as tempera emulsion binders.
“The most rewarding way to experience Pigeon Valley is walking downhill from Uçhisar toward Göreme (approx. 4 km, gentle descent). Hike in the mid-to-late afternoon when the canyon walls provide cool shade, look up at the high cliff faces to spot 19th-century folk-painted dovecotes, and take a refreshing tea break at the quaint trail cafe halfway through.”
