Ortahisar Castle
86-meter colossal natural fairy chimney citadel overlooking traditional stone villages
Overview & Geological Significance
Rising 86 meters high like a natural skyscraper in the town center, Ortahisar is the biggest fairy chimney in Cappadocia. It served as a strategic military redoubt during the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras.
Historical & Cultural Context
Its steep vertical face houses intricate interior staircases, lookout chambers, and storage rooms. The surrounding valley slopes are also famous for ancient cold-storage rock cellars that naturally preserve Anatolian citrus and apples year-round.
“The panoramic lookout terrace across the valley (near the old stone bridge) gives the most dramatic wide-angle shot of the castle with traditional stone cave houses layered beneath its towering shadow at sunset.”
